Casey got to 'job shadow' his dad last week.The first Wednesday of every month is a 'late start' day at the junior high. Since every day is late start around here, it doesn't matter so much. But, Casey's friends like to go to Denny's or someplace for breakfast before they all head off to school.
Now Casey has gotten in the habit of sleeping in until 8:00 or so most mornings. Again, not a big deal, since we don't start on his school work until the other kids are out the door. Yesterday was one such late start for his friends. They had plans to meet at 7:00 AM and walk over to Denny's. Casey got ready the night before- literally. He wore his clothes to bed so he wouldn't be late.
A little before 6 AM Casey came into our room and woke us up. "I'm going now," he said.
"Casey, it's not even 6:oo," Randy replied.
No, the clock said 6:57," Casey insisted.
"Go check the microwave. And why don't you start on your English since you're up," Randy rolled over and went back to sleep.
A little while later, Randy woke up and got dressed. He heard Casey's radio on as he ate his breakfast. At about 6:50, Randy was getting ready to head out. He thought he'd give Casey a ride, but couldn't find him. We both figured he just left without telling us, since that is how Casey is.
Casey got home at about 8:45 AM, saying he had a good time. He got to work on his English and we went about our day. Fast forward to last night...
.....Randy and I were talking to Casey about the importance of telling us when he leaves so we know where he is. Through the conversation, we unraveled the events that transpired earlier that morning:
Casey, in his sleepy state, genuinely thought it was almost 7:00- despite what his dad told him. He took it upon himself to leave anyway. When he got to the designated meeting spot, and found no one there, he thought they had left without him. So after 10 minutes, he walked to Denny's by himself. At 6:00 in the morning! When he got to Denny's he didn't see them either. So rather than coming home, he stayed there. And helped the employees set the tables.
Only Casey would do something like that! And what must they have thought- here is this 12 year old, all by himself at Denny's and it's 6:00 in the morning. And rather than ordering some food, he decides to volunteer his services.
Apparently, the job shadowing thing is addictive.

Oh, that is a great story! He shows initiative,a willingness to help others, and the ability to step in and do what has to be done. However, it is a wonder that no one called about this kid wandering around in the early morning hours with no parents around. I love him!

What a funny kid! He's growing up and taking his independence with him... I don't know what I am going to do with Hayden when he is that age!
It seems to me the older they get the more you worry and the younger they are and under your control the less you worry. It's not going to be long until your baby boy asks for his first real job.
I am so impressed with all the growing up Casey has done this year. He really has bridged the gap between childhood and being a teen...
What happened to the little boy who led the Jedi Counsel in the backyard? :( Time goes too quickly.

I genuinely think that he was the bright spot in those people's day though...

What he chose to do shows great character. Probably aren't too many kids (or adults) willing to do something like that. I'm sure it all comes back to great parenting skills.
