I had a "PTA Meeting" tonight and Randy took Tyler on a date. So it was just Hailey and Casey in charge of the others. When I got home, I took Casey and Hailey with me to the store for some treats for our movie tomorrow. In the car, on the way there, this was the conversation in the back seat. I found it amusing and enlightening....
Casey: "Dang, Hailey! Is this how you feel all the time?!"
Hailey: "Like what?"
Casey: "Like all mature-like?"
Hailey: "Going to the grocery store at night?"
Casey: "No. Like the past hour or so- talking reality."
Hailey: "Uh, yeah..."
Casey: "It feels good. We're actually getting along."
Hailey: "You should try it more often. "
Casey: "I think I'll try!"
Maybe this was the revelation I've been waiting for. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Playing Catch Up
I know some people have missed my posts, so I apologize and I'll try to do better. I have no good excuse other than having six kids home all day, and a husband that says I blog too much! ;) So here I am, typing away, before the kids wake up. Yes, I love you so much, that I gave up some precious sleep- all in the name of blogging. I'll do my best to recap the past little while.....
Saturday, June 14, 2008:
ALOHA SISTER GRAMMA AND ELDER GRAMPA!!!! My parents returned home from their LDS mission to Hawaii. I know, it hardly seems like work to be in paradise for a year. Although they loved it, it was not a vacation. They were, however, lucky enough to associate with many people from many different countries while working at the PCC. They worked hard every day to ensure the guests at the PCC got the most out of their experience. While there, they visited Pearl Harbor countless times, and drove the long drive to the airport and the swap meet, and many other sights, over and over again, so their kids (ie: me) could experience Oahu. They sent packages to my family for holidays and birthdays. And I kept meaning to reciprocate, but I used the excuse that anything I sent them, they'd just need to pack home. But the truth is, I am a slacker daughter. Sorry, Mom and Dad. We missed you and appreciate all you do for us. It's good to have you home!
Saturday was a day of homecomings. My parents in the morning; and Randy and Casey got home from scout camp that afternoon. It was good to have them home, too. They had a fantastic time at Goblin Valley- the best scout camp yet, according to Randy. Everything went smoothly, and Casey returned with 5 merit badges: Water Skiing, Motor Boating, Pioneering, Shotgun Shooting, and Rifle Shooting. He was ecstatic about the shooting merit badges! The Shotgun Merit Badge is no small feat. They have to shoot 12 out of 25 clay pigeons twice in a row! In his words, "I found my career path." He listed all the many things he could do, all the while working with guns; a hunting guide, working for Browning, and working behind the counter at a gun shop. Hmmmm....maybe not the last one, bud.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!! I was not that on top of things this year....could that be because Randy was gone all week? Possibly. I thought of all kinds of things I could buy him, but he'd probably just take them back. So I ended up just buying him some clothes...that he ended up returning. ;) Oh well, I tried. I did make homemade cinnamon rolls andfresh squeezed from a carton OJ for breakfast. We went to church where the kids sang their hearts out with the ever popular "I'm so Glad When Daddy Comes Home" and "My Daddy Is My Favorite Pal". Nathan did great and Casey was glad he was finally too old for it. After church, we had a BBQ at my parents' house....it was nice to be together again.
Monday, June 16, 2008:
Sophie, our momma cat, doesn't like us much right now. Randy dropped her off bright and early for a visit with Mr. Vet. She can no longer have babies :( and vest of all...no longer scratch the couch and carpet! She looks pretty sad right now- with a cone around her neck. I do feel sorry for her, but it's better than the alternative.....

Tyler's first Pinewood Derby. I wanted to post all about it that night, but I was too upset. Tyler's car was dead last in every heat. It was an awesome car that he made all by himself (except for using the scroll saw, of course) He drew it out on paper, and on the block of wood, and he sanded it, and painted it, and put the wheels on all by himself. So, what should have been a fun night, was disappointment for my son. He didn't mind the first few runs that he came in last. But by the last run, when his time and his rank was flashed up on a huge screen for all to see, it was more than he could handle. It was all I could do to not break down and cry right along with him. This derby was too serious for my liking. I much prefer Randy's track. On his track, the cars do loop-da-loops, jump pools of water, and try to knock down bowling pins. Everyone is laughing and cheering and having a wonderful time! No matter how slow your car is, you have a fun time. And nobody wants to stop racing their cars. Not at this one. You got four runs and it was over. The track had a computer timer that measured to the thousandth of a second. Give me a break, these are 8-10 year olds! And I am not just making a stink because my boy came in dead last. I am only upset because of what it did to his self esteem. So Tyler and I decided we will have our own Pinewood Derby, here at our house, with his dad's awesome track!
Wednesday, June 18, 2008:
We went to a 'family picnic' put on by some consultants Randy works with. It was fun explaining to the kids why the coolers were full of beer. Casey took it upon himself to sort all the soda into a different cooler than the beer, so one of his little brothers or sisters wouldn't accidentally take one. The kids had fun playing at the park and I had a good time meeting some new people.
Thursday, June 19, 2008:
Summer officially began! We went swimming at our friends' house. The kids put on their swimsuits after breakfast, and were chompin' at the bit until it was finally time to go. It is the weekly activity we all look forward to every summer. We spend the whole afternoon swimming, jumping, swinging, eating, and talking. What could be better than that?!....this year, she added a shaved ice machine to her many cool things. I'm talkin' a professional one complete with like 20 flavors. I didn't think it was possible, but I think Thursdays just got even better! It took a little while, but Emma finally released her death grip on me and kicked around the pool with her life vest and a swim ring. It was way cute, but I forgot my camera....maybe next week!
Tyler and Hailey both had games that night. It was Tyler's last one, and they got medals. I have mixed feelings on the whole thing. I love going to the games, and I think it is god for them, but at the same time, it's nice that it is finally wrapping up so our evenings are free. Hailey had a game, too. It was their first tournament game...and they won. Mixed feelings here, too. I happy they won, but that means more games....I guess it's only temporary and we'll enjoy it while it lasts.
Friday, June 20, 2008:
I took down Emma's crib. It was a sad moment. I have had that crib up for more than 12 years straight! It was an $80 Wal-Mart crib and it survived my six kids and lots of moves. Emma just hasn't been sleeping in it, and there is already a queen size bed in her and Hannah's room, so she has been sleeping in there really well. So I made it official.
The rest of Friday is a blur. I'm sure we did chores and the kids played outside. And I am pretty sure the kids had their weekly 'slumber part' in the basement. But I am running on too few brain cells to recall any details.
Saturday, June 21, 2008:
I finally cashed in my gift certificate Randy gave me for Valentine's Day and had a massage at the day spa. It was awesome. The girl did a good job and got all the knots out of my back and neck. Never mind that I have bruises now- I asked her to do it hard.
When I got home, I got right to work. We haven't had a Saturday like this one in quite a while. Randy worked on the side yard and went through all the scout stuff, and took a load to the dump, while I painted a desk for Hannah's room. We set up the tent trailer that we bought from my sister last fall...only to find it full of water. I can't figure it out, since there was a huge tarp on it all winter. Hmmmm.....anyway, that is on my to do list this week- find out why it's leaking and try to clean and fix the parts damaged by the water. We'd like to take it out this weekend and kick off our family camping now that scout camp is over.
Sunday, June 22, 2008:
I have totally been depriving myself all these years! You know that over-priced, gimmick, they call Color Wonder? Well, it's worth every penny, and it's no gimmick. For three weeks now, it has kept my kids occupied through sacrament meeting! They all love it (Except Casey, who is just too old for things like that now.) I don't know why I have held out so long, but I'm glad I saw the light and came around.
Tyler planned our Sunday BBQ as part of a cub scout achievement. He helped me make fruit salad and he prepared the fish for the grill (yup, he chose fish....and steak!) It was delicious! He is pretty close to getting his Wolf...and he's only been in a couple of months. He gets excited to go through the book and see what he can pass off. I hope his excitement continues through his whole scouting experience.
Monday, June 23, 2008:
How does the laundry sneak up on me like this?! Oh, I know.....maybe because I haven't been doing my two to three loads a day like I should! Ugh. I have a love/hate relationship with summer at the moment. I love that the kids are home, and we don't have homework and schedules. But I hate that they are home, and they don't have schedules. They are pretty good at doing their chores, but I don't want to keep them in, being my slaves ALL day, so I let them do a couple chores and go out to play. It's not enough, though. I spend the rest of the day trying to fill in the gaps and keep everyone in one piece. Emma loves to go outside, so I either have to stay outside with her (and not get anything done inside) or try to convince her to stay inside and spend my time dealing with her tantrums, in between the other chaos that exists in a home with a gaggle of small children.
Randy reminded me that summer is 1/3 over. Despite my frustrations, I was not happy to realize that because I feel like we haven't done many fun things yet. So, I am determined to plan some fun outings...who cares if we have clean underwear, right?!

Need a Good Home
We have two kittens left. They are both so cute and playful. They are very cuddly and playful. I have had phone calls, but I guess I am too picky who they go to that I haven't been able to let them go yet. I had a man-woman call for our little Manx, Peanut. She got a little snappy with me when I misunderstood which kitty she was calling about. And then she referred to her other cat as 'stupid' and told me she has ferrets and sugar gliders, too. Not that there is anything wrong with either of those pets, I just imagined our little guy going to a filthy, smelly home. And an owner who may or may not think he is a good pet.
I want them to go to a family who will love them and play with them. That is why we let Sophie have kittens in the first place- we had such a hard time finding a kitten when we were looking. I didn't want to pay $300 for an exotic cat. I just wanted a cute little house cat that had been well cared for the first few weeks of it's life. We tried the shelter route and that kitty ended up getting a sick and died on us. Not to mention, it has been a lot of fun, and a very good experience for the kids.
Thanks, Jen for adopting little Indy. It's nice to know he has a good home! And thanks again to Nat, Min, Niki, and Cyndi for being surrogate moms while we were out of town. It means a lot to me! Nat, are you sure you don't want little Zoe? Jeff could get used to it...:)
I love that my kids learn to take care of their pets. They take turns changing the litter box and feeding them. They learn to love and sometimes to grieve. And having an animal brings a different dynamic to the house. It's just a good thing. So any of you reading this that has thought about getting a kitty...just look at these sweet faces and give me a call!

This is Zoe. She is a tiny sweet kitty with tons of energy. She chases her shadow and licks my feet. She loves to cuddle and snuggle on your lap.

This is Peanut (Butter). He is a Manx.....notice he has no tail. He and two of his litter-mates were born like that. Nothing is wrong with him, it's a genetic trait. He is a fun, playful guy. He falls asleep on your lap and loves to play with string and other toys.

Nurse Nancy
I am seriously considering getting my nursing degree. Not because I want to go to work, but because it could save us a ton of money.
My mom was a nurse. She used to have these nursing books full of really graphic pictures. I loved looking though them! I guess she thought it wasn't appropriate for her young daughter to enjoy such morbid things, and she put the books away. Years later, I found them. I was so excited to flip trough them again. I turned to one of my favorite pictures- probably a lacerated tongue or a mutilated finger, and I got sick. I couldn't look. I was ruined. My dreams of becoming a nurse were shattered. How could I be in the ER and faint when a patient came in with his brains hanging out?
I took a first aid class in college and fainted during a video- I don't even remember what it was about. When Casey was a baby and had surgery, my mom had to come stay with me so she could take care of him. Whenever he got stitches, she had to come with me. It's a good thing she did, because one time, I ended up fainting right there in the ER. I fainted once when my blood was drawn. I fainted when I broke my tailbone. It is just thought of it. So when I was in labor with Casey and arrived at the hospital fully dilated, you know why I asked for anesthesia...and not the mirror. I really didn't want to be passed out for the birth of my child. But over the years, I have toughened up. Just a bit. If you know my kids, you know why I have had to. Here are some of the Jefferies' family 'stats' to the best of my recollection:
Casey: 2 sets of stitches; 5 broken bones; 3 surgeries
Hailey: 1 set of stitches; 1 broken bone; 2 surgeries
Tyler: 1 set stitches; 1 broken bone; 1 surgery
Hannah: 1 set of stitches; some staples, too; 1 surgery
Nathan: 5 sets of stitches (a set of staples, too) ; 1 surgery
And that is not counting the number of times I super glued a cut at home or the doctor used DermaBond. And contrary to popular belief many of these injuries have occurred doing normal every day things. For example, one of Casey's broken bones happened when he was walking upstairs. His ankle simply broke. And Nathan has had more than one set of stitches by simply falling at the wrong time, and say, tearing his cheek on a play birdcage. Or Hannah, falling off a bed and hitting her head on a chair.
Today was a typical day.....
Hailey turfed it on her rollerblades today. She hit a bump on the sidewalk and her knee slid against the concrete.

And I hardly flinched when we were at the sprayground and I heard Nathan crying. I figured he was tired and somebody wronged him. And then I saw the blood. Pouring out of his mouth. Tyler had gone down the slide, and he followed. He bumped into Tyler and split his lip open. It looked pretty nasty (just like the time Casey went down a slide with a metal pipe in his mouth- a long one. It hit the ground before his feet. He had a huge gauge taken out of the roof of his mouth. )Lucky for us, nothing is done for lips, so I got to save a co-pay. In fact, it already looks quite a bit better.
And then poor Tyler. We were on a walk/ bike ride when he came to a bump on the sidewalk. As he went over it, his fron t tire fell off. Completely. He fell to the ground. Luckily, he only got a little scrape.

Between the accidents and illnesses, I'm thinking maybe I should apply for an honorary nursing degree. Then I could save myself an arm and a leg in co-pays (pun intended) and from having to study those gruesome books. If nothing else, maybe I should learn how to suture.

Is it Just Me?...
....or is this really strange....even bordering on creepy:

I can't figure out why she still lets him nurse. I mean, he out-weighs her by at least six pounds! It was one thing when he was nursing with the rest of them. But then he followed her until she laid down and he started at it again.

It's almost as bad as the lady I saw nursing a five year-old at Disneyland. It's just not right.
A Hawaiian Vacation
I finally downloaded some pictures of our trip to Hawaii for a slide show. There are a lot of pictures and it was too slow, so I gave up trying to add captions. maybe I'll try again later, but in the mean time- here it is!

Don't Flow a Fit!
Emma is a full fledged two-year old. This morning she flipped that I got the wrong spoon for her. (Oh no, not her too! Is there really something wrong with my choice of spoons?) Nathan said to her. "You get what you get, and you don't flow a fit!" and then he added, "And YOU are flowing a fit!"

Scoutmaster Widow
This is the week. Well, it actually started last week. Even though Randy wasn't really here last week, this week Randy is officially gone. Scout camp is the two and half weeks out of the year that everything at our house is scouts. Although this year isn't quite 'scouty' as the past three years when I was in Cub Scouts, too.
Randy loves it. He's not the type to go to a council sponsored camp and sit around camp all day reading a book. Nope. He does his own scout camp. This year, they changed the travel restrictions, and they were able to go to Goblin Valley. Randy had some great meals planned, a hike though a slot canyon, and some super fun merit badges for the boys to earn. Rifle/shotgun shooting, orienteering, motor boating, water skiing, and pioneering. Using their 'lashing skills, they will build catapults out of lodge poles and have a water balloon fight. Sounds fun, eh? The best part is, Casey actually gets to go this year. I don't just say that because he is gone for a week....but because it's nice for Randy's efforts to benefit his son. And Casey has sen him leave for the past five summers. I wonder if Randy will still be doing this when Tyler and Nathan are Boy Scouts.
While Randy is gone. we kind of take it easy. I heat frozen stuff for dinner, or we just go out to eat. And we stay up late and watch movies and eat popcorn and candy. Oh, and the house is a wreck. That kind of happens when Dad isn't coming home at night. :)
The sports season is starting to wind down. Only four more games. Tyler had a nice play tonight. He was playing second baseman and he caught the ball and threw it straight to the first baseman (who actually caught it) and he got the runner out. It was pretty exciting....at this age, that is a rarity. Hailey has also had some nice plays. She hit a home run at one game, and she has assisted in a double play. Casey has improved this season. He is an awesome hitter at home, but he freezes at bat during a game. In 'the majors' it's a lot of pressure. I remember being the same way. I'd step up to the plate and pray that the pitcher would walk me. I knew if I swung, my chances were worse that I'd strike out. I finally figured out a few years ago, that I can hit a ball if I bat left-handed. Go figure.
Hannah had her ballet recital a week and a half ago. It was very cute. She was so proud of herself for remembering the dance. The music started before the teacher got down front to lead them, but Hannah didn't skip a beat. And all the other kids were able to follow her lead!
Well, I hear pitter-patter upstairs and it is waaaaay past their bed time....maybe this is a little too relaxed...even for me.

Flashback Friday
OK, so I thought I'd try a "Flashback Friday" like a few of my friends do. I won't guarantee anything.....nothing fancy, nothing too exciting, and probably no consistency. But today, I thought I'd give it a shot. Since I like to fly by the seat of my pants, I didn't feel like searching for a picture or scanning something from a box. So this flashback is only 5 years....

This was at Randy's Grandpa's house- 2003. We would visit him several times a year and the kids had a great time playing in his big backyard. We sit and talk about life and he'd tell stories of life in a different era. He'd reminisce of the days he could run to the top of Timp and back just for fun. He spoke fondly of his wife whom he was eager to be with again. A little over a year later, his wish was granted. I miss those visits. But I look forward to seeing him again. Since my own grandparents passed away when I was young, he was my Grandpa.

Pooped
I caved. I let Nathan have cereal before bed one night last week. He was so tired, I didn't want to fight him on it. He was beyond tired- he was POOPED!
Who says males can't multi-task? He can eat and sleep at the same time- he's one talented kid!

The Job That Never Ends
This is what I felt like last night as I sat, folding a mountain of laundry (to the tune of "This is the Song that Never Ends") :
It is the job that never ends,
Yes it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started doing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue doing it forever just because
Yes it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started doing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue doing it forever just because
It is the job that never ends,
Yes it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started doing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue doing it forever just because
It is the job that never ends,

And they'll continue doing it forever just because
It is the job that never ends,
Yes it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started doing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue doing it forever just because.....
....repeat it over and over again, until your head explodes!

PC Kids
I'm not talkin' the computer type of PC...I mean Politically Correct. The other day, Hannah was talking about something. I don't even remember what because I was distracted by her use of the term "Mail Carrier".
Me: "Oh, you mean the mailman?"
Hannah: "No. It's 'Mail Carrier"
Me: "But he's a man, right?"
Hannah: "Well, yeah, but you call him a mail carrier."
Me: "I call him a mail man."
Hannah: "But he's a mail carrier."
Me: "Who taught you that?"
Hannah: "My teacher."
Of course. How much mail does he actually carry? All I see him do is drive up to the curb and shove a few credit card applications and coupons into my box. Not much carrying going on there.

Silly Nathan
I haven't written because apprently, our Norton expired without warning and our computer was infected. So, here is a quick post...
I was out last Thursday night and came home to find Nathan had almost lost his eye, courtesy of Tyler. Casey had found an antenna in the gutter and Tyler was using it as a javelin. It missed Nathan's eye by a few millimeters. It was a small wound, but one that I thought required some attention. At 10:30 at night, I wasn't thrilled about my options of emergency care. So , I called my neighor who is a sport's....somthing guy....he bandages up the atheltes. So off we go to his house. He fixed nathan up with some steri-strips, much like butterfly bandages, but better. They actuallystayed on until Sunday night. That is much more than I can say for any DermaBond that we have had. So, fast forward to Monday...I was sitting on the couch with Nathan, looking at the progress of his injury. I asked him if it bled when the 'bandaids' came off.
Me: "Did it start bleeding?"
Nathan: "No, it blood watered."
Me: "Blood water?"
Nathan: "It's just water that is red."
Last night, in my summer laziness, I stopped by Albertson's for their 'Cheap Chicken Monday' and grabbed some good 'ol fried chicken legs and wings. This was the conversation at the dinner table:
Nathan: "Does this have skin on it?"
Me: "Uh huh."
Nathan: "Who's?"
Me: "The chicken's"
Nathan: "Did someone die?"
Me: "The chicken."
Nathan: "Jesus?"
Me: "Yes, but the skin on the chicken is from the chicken."
Needless to say, he didn't eat it.
