My Soapbox

This is video is a little long (8 minutes,) but I am passionate about this. The Less-Homeowrk Revolution. I encourage anyone who feels the same way to do something about it.

I don't agree 100% with this clip as it states homework should be no more than 10 minutes per grade (10 minutes for 1st grade, 60 for 6th grade, 120 for 12th grade, etc.) The flaw with that is that what the teacher thinks should take 10 minutes may take your child an hour. We had this problem last year with Tyler. His teacher was not understanding about it. But luckily, his teacher this year is much more open to the idea of scaling back. And then, factor in the number of kids you have. For me, this would total 160 minutes each night. And since the homework usually needs help from a parent, that is almost three hours each night I spend with the kids doing homework. They get home at 3:30, so that means I can begin making dinner at 6:10. After we clean up from dinner, we start the bedtime routine. When does my kid get to be a kid?

This clips also sites the Duke University study that shows homework has no correlation to performance in the elementary school level, and very little at the Jr. High level. By high school, it should max at 2 hours per night. So, according to that, I should not even know what it's like to do homework with my kids. I am sorry to say that I know all too well.

I am right there with you on this issue! If you need any help with rallying at the school, I'd be more than happy to lend my support. So far, we've been very lucky to have teachers that understand this. I really don't think Elementary students should have any homework except spelling words, reading (at the parent's discretion) and the occasional report. And maybe sometimes if they don't finish an assignment in class (because they're messing around, not busywork).

I'm dreading Quinn entering the 5th and 6th grades. Carrie had constant homework and "projects". She hated it. I hated it. Sigh...

I'm on board, too. I'd be happy to lend my support to less/no homework so we can all have more family time.

I totally agree on the homework issue. Kids shouldn't have homework in school, untill they reach jr. high. Reading only! With the occasional worksheet.
